  • Play inconsistently?
  • Fluff crucial chip shots?
  • Get distracted on the course?
  • Feel lacking in skills to understand your own game

Who should use it?

Anyone who wants to get better at golf or who wants to gain a better understanding of themselves will benefit. In fact, if you want to help correct any problems mentioned above this tool will help. The mentaga Benchmark Profile also reflects who you are off the golf course and how your behavioural style influences your approach to your career, home life, relationships and other sports. We have had players of all abilities complete the tool and training program with great results, from professional golfers right up to 36 handicap players.

What is the mentaga Benchmark Report?

The mentaga Benchmark Report is generated after completing the online mentaga questionnaire. The report benchmarks your mental abilities against those of professional and low handicap players. It gives you in-depth feedback on your own personal style and how this impacts on both your game of golf and other parts of your life. It highlights strengths to help you achieve your goals, and areas that may be holding you back from reaching your potential. It also produces a personal training plan with specific exercises aimed at addressing your identified development areas.

‘Change follows naturally and unforced once quality feedback or input is received’

We have had over 5000 people worldwide complete the mentaga Benchmark Questionnaire to date. More people complete it every day with their results added to our growing database players worldwide.

What is in the mentaga Benchmark Report?

There are two report options. The first report is complimentary, and gives you a brief overview of your results. For a nominal cost you can download the full mentaga Benchmark Report.

The mentaga benchmark report is comprehensive. It gives you an introduction to mental abilities in golf, outlines you Benchmark Profile showing how you compare to top golfers, gives an explanation of your results and contains a personal training plan specific to your results.

Why did mentaga develop the tool?

As sports psychologists we were interested in understanding why some golfers are better than others and what mentally they do differently. If we could understand this then we reasoned we could help golfers of all abilities understand their own game better to begin to build a better game and shoot lower scores. On the surface each golfer appears different, for example golfers come in different shapes, sizes, gender, and background. Each player also had a unique swing.

However after studying over 1000 golfers in Europe, including over 100 professional golfers and many low and high handicap players, we quickly understood there are distinct differences. The differences lay in the golfers approach to the mental side of the game. The mentaga benchmark profile and training plan was developed based on this extensive research

‘I am able to control only that which I am self aware. That which I am unaware controls me. Awareness empowers me.’

Why are Mental abilities important in golf?

Golf is one of those sports where everyone can play, no matter their age, shape, size and gender. It is also a game where the mental side is more important to success than physical attributes. Some say up to 90% of golf is down to the mind! In saying this however the mental side is the most misunderstood part of the game of golf, many saying it is ‘psychobabble.’ Much of this is due to people not understanding its importance or how to develop it. People are able to see how to correct a grip, or see how Tiger Woods swings a club, however they are unable to see how to increase their confidence or understand how golfers make great shots under pressure.

Most golf lessons focus on the fundamentals such as grip, posture and swing. These are very important however once you have the basics it is your mental approach to the game that will influence your scoring. There are numerous examples illustrating why the mental game is important, some are listed below:

  • We have all been in a situation where we hit the ball well at the driving range but we’re not able to translate that to the golf course!
  • Think of the hundreds of golfers who go to qualifying schools for the various professional tour circuits around the world who miss out on getting their card – each has great fundamentals however why do they miss out?
  • Why is it once players win an event they are more likely to win more?
  • We can all hit great shots sometimes – why can’t we hit them more often?
‘We tend to get what we focus on. If we fear failure, we are focussed on failure and that is what we get’

‘The mind is key, but where is the key to the mind?’

‘I am able to control only that which I am self aware. That which I am unaware controls me. Awareness empowers me.’

How soon will I get better?

We cannot offer you a quick-fix to helping the mental side of your game. Anyone who does offer a ‘quick-fix’ is not being honest. What we offer is the opportunity to understand areas you need to work on and then give you specific tips on how to work on those aspects. After practise you should improve your game. The personal report gives you greater insight into how to change your behaviour and explains the rationale to help you improve faster. Through awareness you will understand what you need to work on.

How do I interpret the results?

The report will interpret your results and outline your strengths and development areas as benchmarked against professional golfers. It gives a tailored training plan directed at your needs to help you achieve your goals. For best results we recommend you complete a feedback session with a mentaga Accredited Coach lasting about 30 minutes. This can be completed over the phone, face to face or via email. This can be arranged through an accredited mentaga coach or via our online or telephone service. Please email us at helpline@golf.mentaga.com
coach@golf.mentaga.com com to arrange.

‘Building awareness, responsibility and self awareness is the goal of the coach’

‘Coaching provokes proactive, focussed thought, attention and observation’

How does it differ to other tools on the market?

This is the most robust and comprehensive tool to help you understand your mental game in golf. We developed it specifically to measure differences in golfers based on extensive research. We are fortunate to combine our passion for psychology with our passion for golf, and are committed to ongoing research. Having sampled other tools on the market we believe no other programme is as focussed on improving the mental side of your golf game than mentaga. When you complete we use your results (confidentially) in our research to find out more about the mental side of golf. Please keep visiting our website for updated information on our research. You will access this when you register.

How often should I do mentaga?

We recommend you complete the tool again after six months to see how you have changed. Obviously this depends on the work you have done to develop your mental and technical skills, so you may do it sooner or later than this. By discussing it with an Accredited mentaga Coach they will help you to understand it better in your own context, and they will be better able to help you improve your golf.

What happens to my results?

By completing the questionnaire we ask to use the results for our ongoing research. We guarantee your results are anonymous, as we are interested in trends across groups of people. Our technology captures the data so we are able to better refine our research into differences between good and poor golfers. Already we have the most comprehensive research project ever in this field, however we are able to do more. We keep all information confidential and only release research in broad terms. As we collect the data we are interested in researching differences in mental skills between countries.

How much does it cost?

It is free to register your details to find out more about mentaga Golf. You can also complete the questionnaire for free and access a complimentary snapshot report. To download the full mentaga Benchmark Profile costs a nominal fee of 29 EUR which you can pay using your credit card.
